Nursing students enrolled in Bryan’s BSN program are required to demonstrate psychomotor skills with precision while utilizing clinical judgment to execute the correct combination of cognitive, sensory, and motor functions. Students who do not meet the established passing standard for a psychomotor skill will be expected to remediate and engage in repetitive practice prior to retesting at a later date. Successful performance of skill(s) is necessary to meet course outcomes and pass the clinical portion of the course. The student will receive a failing grade for clinical if unable to successfully demonstrate a skill after the third attempt. Psychomotor skills assessments will follow the clinical absence policy for the undergraduate nursing program.
Guidelines
- Psychomotor skills assessment must be complete before the end of the course.
- Students must complete each psychomotor skill individually.
- Psychomotor skills will be evaluated in either a simulated, skills lab, or clinical environment.
- Faculty should attempt to make skill check offs as realistic as possible.
- Faculty must provide students with information on which psychomotor skill(s) will be assessed during the course.
- Faculty must use approved psychomotor skills checklist(s) and provide these forms to students.
- Students must have the resources and multiple opportunities to practice psychomotor skill(s) before being assessed by faculty.
- Faculty should offer a variety of supplies/medications for students to appropriately select items when completing the skill and use clinical judgment.
- Faculty must allow time and opportunities for remediation to occur.
- Faculty must have documentation of the student successfully or unsuccessfully performing the skill(s) before the end of the course.
