The Faculty of Bryan College of Health Sciences believe it is necessary to address the issue of a dress code for the following reasons; 1) client safety, 2) need for asepsis, and 3) projection of a professional image. It is believed by the Faculty that a professional image is important to convey knowledge, skill and authority of the healthcare provider. You are encouraged to observe the culture in which you work and act and dress accordingly. In consideration of the above, the Faculty have established the following criteria.
Sonography
During skills lab and clinical time, you are to wear the following:
- The College patch affixed on all white/navy lab coats and scrub tops over the left chest area.
- Dress pants, business casual top, and a white/navy lab coat OR
- Dresses at least knee length and a lab coat OR
- Skirts (at least knee length), business casual top, and a white lab coat OR
- Only uniform and lab coats designated by the College may be worn. Pant legs must not touch the floor
- Footwear: No opened-toed shoes are permitted in the clinical settings. Clean, predominately white, grey, or black in color.
- Keep jewelry at a minimum during skills lab and clinical times. Jewelry will need to be removed if it jeopardizes medical asepsis or patient safety.
- Name Tag: A name tag must be worn during all school activities.
- Body Piercing: All jewelry, ear, and facial piercings (e.g. eyebrows, nose, lip, tongue, excessive ear) should not pose a potential safety issue.
- Nails: Length and condition of natural nails will be conducive to safety and effective hand washing. Artificial nails may not be worn, this includes shellac and appliques. Polish may be worn if it is in a muted color (i.e. natural, beige, light pink). Nail polish will not be chipped, cracked or peeling.
- Hair: Hair and facial hair must be clean and neatly combed. Hair should be appropriately secured out of the face to maintain volunteer and patient safety.
- Scented body care products, perfumes, or colognes should not be worn when having direct volunteer or patient contact.
- Personal Hygiene: Good personal hygiene is mandatory at all times. Clothing should be free of strong odors.
- Gum chewing is not allowed during direct volunteer or patient contact.
- Tattoos that use profanity or promote violence, hatred, malicious intolerance, bigotry, or otherwise violate the values and standards of Bryan College of Health Sciences must be covered at all times.
- In addition to any of the above guidelines, students must comply with all dress code policies of any external clinical sites they attend.
